General Information

Courses for advancement:  The CEF Summer Academy is for course advancement and is not for grade improvement or credit recovery. Credit courses taken through CEF Summer Academy meet graduation requirements at Carlsbad High School and the University of California a-g subject requirements.

Non-CUSD students:  Students attending school outside Carlsbad Unified School District are welcome to register for the CEF Summer Academy.  Students should check with their current school to be sure the course they are interested in taking meets their school’s graduation requirements.  Students outside the district also need to include immunization records with their registration.

Prerequisites:  Please make sure that the prerequisites have been met before registering for a class. For CHS those registering for courses requiring a prerequisite, will be verified prior to finalizing enrollment.  Those students not attending a Carlsbad Unified school will need to submit a copy of their transcript showing verification that they have met the prerequisite as stated in the course descriptions.

Priority registration:  Registration is on a first-come, first-served enrollment basis. CEF will hire the teaching staff based on Summer Academy enrollment. At times, the demand for a particular class may be greater than the number of seats available. CEF will make every effort to provide additional classes if early registration enrollment indicates a need, and facilities and qualified teachers are available. Unfortunately, classes that do not meet enrollment requirements may be cancelled by CEF.

Material Fees: An additional charge for materials or lab supplies is added to the following classes:

Digital Photography- $30

Art- $30

Physics- $50

Biology - $50

Students with special needs:  The Carlsbad Educational Foundation is a non-public entity acting as a third party to offer summer courses.  Reasonable accommodations will be made for students with special needs on a case-by-case basis.

Grades:  Final report cards will be mailed home for all credit courses approximately two weeks after the end of the CEF Summer Academy.

Transcripts:  All Carlsbad High School students taking credit courses, including incoming CUSD 9th graders, will have their summer course grades posted on their CHS transcripts. If any adjustments need to be made to their fall schedules, it is the student’s responsibility to contact a high school counselor. For those students who do not currently attend Carlsbad schools, an official report card will be mailed to their address. Students may also request an official transcript by contacting the CEF offices at (760) 929-1555. Please allow at least 3 weeks after the completion of the Summer Academy before requesting a transcript.

Final exams:  Due to the compressed nature of the class, a final summative exam is required.  Each teacher will determine when his or her final exam is given or when a final project is due.  Any absences during the final three days of school may impact the final grade or attendance requirement.

Withdrawal deadline:  Once class has begun, students may withdraw with no transcript consequences from a course until 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, the 5th day of class by completing the Drop Request form.   Students who choose to withdraw from a course after the 5th day deadline, but before the final exam or the last day of class, whichever is earlier, will receive a “W” on their transcript indicating a withdrawal from the class.

A  Drop Request Form must be processed for all dropped classes. This form can be obtained at the CEF Summer Academy office.

The parent or guardian, student, and teacher must all sign the form.

Textbook clearance must be obtained by the library staff, if indicated by the teacher.

Final approval for dropping a CEF Summer Academy class will be given by the CEF Summer Academy office.
